Degree Apprenticeship Experience Day

17 pupils had a fantastic time today learning about degree apprenticeships in health and care, provided by the University of Wolverhampton. They got to learn about the different courses available, the facilities provided, and they got a taste of what doing a degree apprenticeship would be like. They also learned how to save someone’s life if they are experiencing anaphylaxis, and how to administer chest compressions correctly.  Many of the pupils have now said they are much more likely to do a degree apprenticeship in the future!

SpellingBee-Winners

Spelling Success! Trust-wide Spelling Bee brings together all eight Matrix schools.

We are thrilled to celebrate the incredible success of our very first Trust-wide Spelling Bee – a vibrant event that brought together pupils from all our schools, in a showcase of linguistic talent, nerves of steel, and community spirit.

Over 40 brilliant spellers from Key Stages 2 and 3 took to the stage, each tackling an impressive word list of more than 150 challenging entries. From phosphorescent to megalomaniac, cantankerous, chihuahua, frittata, and hieroglyphics, the competition tested not only vocabulary but also memory, focus, and composure under pressure.

The atmosphere was electric, with supporters gripped from start to finish, watching each round unfold on the edge of their seats. In an extraordinary finish, two winners were crowned – a testament to just how high the standard was. Huge congratulations to our co-champions: one from Etone College and the other from Bloxwich Academy Primary.

Both of them had to complete the tie breaker, spelling as accurately as possible a fearsome word which they had not been told in advance: ANTIDISESTABLISHMENTARIANISM. Both of them spelled it correctly!

This inaugural event marks the beginning of what we expect to become a favourite in the Matrix events calendar. A huge thank you to all the pupils, staff and supporters who made this possible. We’re already looking forward to next year’s Spelling Bee!

Important Guidance for Hot Weather

With warmer weather expected over the next few days, we’d like to remind you of a few important steps to help keep our pupils safe and comfortable at school:

  • Sun Cream: Please apply a high-factor, long-lasting sun cream to your child before they come to school each morning. Staff are unable to apply sun cream during the day, so we recommend using an all-day formula where possible.
  • Sun Hats and Headwear: We encourage all children to bring a named sun hat or cap to school to protect them during outdoor activities and playtimes.
  • School Uniform: Pupils are welcome to wear their summer uniform – including short-sleeved shirts, summer dresses, or plain black, non-logo shorts. Please ensure your child is dressed in light, breathable clothing that adheres to our uniform policy.
  • Hydration: All children will be supplied with a school water bottle to ensure they have access to water throughout the day, as and when needed. This supports our commitment to staying hydrated and maintaining our Healthy Schools status.

Thank you for your continued support in helping us keep our school community safe and comfortable during the warmer weather.

SEND: Help Your Child At Home

Preparing for School
Starting school is an exciting adventure for your child! As a parent or carer, you are your child's first and most important teacher. The everyday interactions you share at home lay the strongest foundation for their learning journey.

This guide shares simple, effective ways you can help your child become confident and 'school ready'. Focusing on these key areas will make the transition smoother and more successful.

Emotional Regulation and Independence

Being able to manage feelings and cope with changes is essential for settling into the school environment.

  • Name Feelings: Help your child identify what they are feeling by giving it a name. Say things like, "You look frustrated that the tower fell down," or "I can see you're feeling happy right now!" This builds their emotional vocabulary.
  • Teach Coping Strategies: Practice simple ways to calm down. This might be taking a deep breath, counting to five, or finding a quiet corner. Help them understand that it's okay to feel upset, but they need to learn how to react to that feeling.
  • Routines and Predictability: Keep routines consistent at home (bedtime, mealtimes). This sense of predictability helps children feel safe and secure, which supports their ability to handle bigger changes, like starting school.

Communication and Language (Oracy)
The best way to develop strong communication skills is through talking and listening!

  • Chat About Your Day: Talk about what you are doing together (e.g., "I am putting the red socks in the washing machine now."). Use new and interesting words.
  • Listen Actively: Give your child your full attention when they speak. Ask them open-ended questions like, "Tell me about…" or "How did you feel when…?"
  • Share Stories: Read together daily. Talk about the pictures, the characters, and what might happen next.

Physical Skills (Handwriting)
Developing the small muscles in the hands is vital for good handwriting. These skills develop naturally through play!

  • Play with Purpose: Encourage activities like playing with LEGO/Duplo, rolling playdough (squeezing, squashing, and cutting it), using safety scissors, or drawing and colouring with chunky crayons.
  • Developing Control: Practice threading beads or using tongs to pick up small items. Even simple tasks like tearing paper can build strength!

Literacy Foundations (Phonics)
Phonics is about hearing and recognising the different sounds that make up words.

  • Rhyme Time: Share nursery rhymes and rhyming books. Play simple rhyming games ("What rhymes with 'cat'?").
  • Sound Detective: Listen to the world around you. Ask your child to identify sounds: "I can hear a dog barking!" or "Listen to the tap dripping." Play 'I Spy' using the sound a word begins with, not the letter name (e.g., "I spy with my little eye something that begins with 's-s-s'").

Early Maths Skills
Maths is all around us! Helping your child notice and talk about numbers, shapes, and measurements builds a strong foundation for numeracy.

  • Count Everything: Practice counting objects that can be touched, such as toys, pieces of fruit, or socks. When counting, ensure they touch or point to each item to understand the one-to-one principle.
  • Explore Shapes and Size: Talk about the shapes you see in the environment (e.g., "Look, the clock is a circle," or "The window is a rectangle"). Use language to compare sizes: bigger, smaller, longer, shorter.
  • Time and Routine: Talk about the sequence of your day using words like first, next, and last. Involve them in simple sorting tasks, like putting spoons in one pile and forks in another.

personal development calendar

Personal Development Calendar

All schools across our Trust have been working collaboratively to recognise and celebrate key dates in the PSHE calendar. These are in addition to other events that will also be taking place in our individual schools. We are very proud to share our Matrix Academy Trust Personal Development Calendar which gives details of the events where our schools have come together to produce a wide range of activities for our pupils. These events will be recognised through a combination of assemblies and form time activities as well as their importance being widely publicised through our social media platforms and in schools through displays, posters and TV screens. For some events, there will be additional activities planned such as competitions to engage our learners in the real meaning of these days.

There is a wide range of days recognised to acknowledge different faiths and groups as well as promote very important themes such as equality, diversity, wellbeing and British Values. This project epitomises the real spirit of collaboration in our school as well as our commitment to ensuring that our pupils have the knowledge and skills to not only keep themselves safe but be ready and able to make a valuable contribution to society.
