Welcome to Year 6

We have a very exciting year ahead for the children in their final year of primary school. The Cornerstones topics that we will be completing are Maafa (Autumn term), Frozen Kingdom (Spring term) and Britain at War (Summer term). As well as this, we will be preparing the children for their Key Stage 2 SATs in the Summer term.

Maafa Project

During the Autumn term, the children will be studying the topic of Maafa, which means disaster in Swahili. This project teaches children about Africa past and present and the development of the slave trade. It also explores Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade, the causes and consequences of the European colonisation of Africa and the worldwide communities. Alongside this, they will be completing art projects studying influential artists as part of Tints, Tones and Shades and Trailblazers. They will also begin to explore Our changing world as part of a Geography unit.

Frozen Kingdoms Project

Spring term will see the children learning about Antarctica and the Arctic in a Geography topic entitled Frozen Kingdoms. This project teaches children about the characteristics and features of polar regions, including the North and South Poles, and includes a detailed exploration of the environmental factors that shape and influence them for children to understand how our continent is different to others and how the world is changing. They will also be creating environmental art and understanding the features of different animals around the world.

Britain at War Project

The final topic that the children will learn about in Year 6 is Britain at War. This project teaches children about the causes, events and consequences of the First and Second World Wars, the influence of new inventions on warfare, how life in Great Britain was affected and the legacy of the wars in the post-war period. The children will also be understanding how clothes were mended during these times whilst completing a make do and mend D+T project.

Spellings

Children will be learning a new spelling pattern weekly in class and will be sent home with a list of spellings linked to their learning. Please practise these often ahead of a weekly spelling test on a Friday.

Homework

In Year 6 we expect that children will be reading at least 3 times a week with an adult and recording this in their reading diary, which should be returned to school every day. They will complete an online quiz on Accelerated Reader after completing each book.

Every child has a Times Tables Rockstars log in, which we would like them to be using frequently in order to improve speed and accuracy of multiplication tables. Please let us know if you have any issues logging in.

Children will all receive homework books where they will be expected to complete a few pages each week as directed by the teachers. These books will then need to be returned to school each week to check through and mark.
